Pokemon began in the wild, complete separate from humans. People - for the most part - use to hunt them for food or fear them because of the magical abilities they possessed that could easily destroy human towns. However, the taming and capturing of Pokemon began when a band of humans attempting to domesticate these beasts. Plucking them from when they were young, if exposed to humans for their entire life, the Pokemon would loose their feral behavior and become significantly weaker, but more friendly. These tame Pokemon still had attacks, but did not usually Evolve. It wasn't until people had the idea of reinacting wild Pokemon battles and setting up competitions for the strongest Pokemon that the Pokemon began getting stronger and evolving into most ferocious beasts.
And for a while, that's how it went. Pokemon became a more integrated part of society, and humans began naming these special "attacks" they could do. It wasn't long before a group of scientists developed something called the "Pokeball", which had the ability to contain a weakened Pokemon. These "Pokeballs" spread everywhere, and humans began battling wild Pokemon and catching them right and left. Soon people would build up huge teams of Pokemon, and evolve them into giant monsters. Others, however, choose to keep Pokemon like Meowths and Growlithes as pets. Following the invention of the Pokeball came the invention of the Pokedex, which was a handheld device that would record the data of Pokemon. Eager to learn more about these creatures, teenagers and adults alike were given Pokedexes and sent around the region of Kanto, capturing and recording many species of Pokemon.
Soon more types of Pokeballs flooded out - Greatballs, Superballs, Ultraballs. The Pokemon Tournament Foundation was set up, encouraging trainers to collect more Pokemon and have them compete against each other for the title of "Pokemon Master". To go with that, a new type of Pokeball - a Masterball - was invented, with the uncanny strength ability to capture a Pokemon without fail. New trainers were given out already captured Pokemon by professors, and typically were given Pokeballs to start with. They were turned loose into the wild world of Pokemon, encouraged to "Catch 'em All" and become the best "Pokemon Trainer" the world had ever known. At the minimum age of fifteen, many students dropped out of school in order to pursue the mysterious path of a Pokemon Trainer. Many trainers began only capturing a few types of Pokemon, and after "Pokemon Gyms" were established in almost every town, offers to become a "Gym Leader" were sent out to extremely strong and renowned trainers.
BALL TYPES:

Here, the method is extremely similar. Main characters - Ash, May, Dawn, Tracey, Paul, Gary, etc. - must start over. Let me just say that if your character has ever competed in the Pokemon League and has beaten Ash in a battle and is not a gym leader or pre-established strong Pokemon trainer, then you have to start over. Ask for clarifications. However, "normal" trainers as well as gym leaders, police officers and people of other occupations, and team members do not have to start over. They can still have their old Pokemon team. Main characters can either start with the Pokemon their character began with, at its lowest stage, or pick a new one. For example. If you played May, she could either start her journey with a Torchic, or she could visit a laboratory and get a completely new Pokemon that wasn't a Torchic. After you have your first Pokemon, you get five Pokeballs. If you use them all up, you'll need to buy more. If you're looking to catch wild Pokemon, try posting in a Route, and putting [WP!] for "Wild Pokemon" in your title, or make it otherwise clear in your post that you are looking to catch something. One of the admins will then roleplay out a wild Pokemon for you to battle. If you defeat it and capture it in a Pokeball, it becomes yours.
