What makes Pokemon unique is their ability to use "attacks", as humans call them. All Pokemon are born from an egg knowing one or two attacks of their type. While there is a wide variety of attacks they are able to learn, they can only master a maximum of two at birth, and the one or two they are born knowing is at complete random. A Pidgey could be born knowing Sand Attack and Tackle, or Aerial Ace and Whirlwind. It is all completely random. However, as a Pokemon ages and matures, studies have shown that they are able to learn up to four attacks. In the wild, a Pokemon are able to learn more attacks without any trainer assistance, but oftentimes a content wild Pokemon will never learn all four attacks, and oftentimes will only be able to use two or three. A more agitated and aggressive Pokemon can learn up to all four, though it is much more likely that a Pokemon will learn all four attacks if in the possession of a trainer.
These attacks that a Pokemon learns later in life are also learned randomly. Pokemon can pick up certain attacks and just have the inability to learn others, no matter the environment, strength, or exposure. Though a while back, a group of scientists invented something called "Technical Machines", which, when attached to a Pokemon, changed which attacks it was able to learn. Attaching an Earthquake TM to a Slowpoke made it able to "naturally" learn Earthquake. When attaching a TM to a young Pokemon or a Pokemon with three or less attacks, it would progressively learned the attached TM's attack over a series of several days, no matter its age or experience. But when attached to a Pokemon with already four attacks, it would slowly forget and lose its ability to do one, and gain the TM's attack. The attack that it forgets is completely random, and trainer's have no control over what attack their Pokemon forgets when they attach a TM. The attacks a Pokemon can learn also depend on its type. Like said before, a Pokemon can have one or two types, and can only learn attacks within that range. If a Flamethrower TM is attached to a Caterpie, nothing happens. Most Pokemon attacks are what some trainers describe as "magical", or "elemental". A Pokemon can know up to four attacks, but can still function like a normal creature. Though a Rapidash may know Flamethrower, Stomp, Fury Attack, and Growl, it still has the ability to stomp and bite the other Pokemon during battle. A Pokemon's known attacks are simply advancements of their natural behavior. A Stomp attack is different from a Rapidash stomping its hoof in that the attack will be more powerful, and the equine's hooves will light on fire or the attack with be given with more strength. Like the attack Bite, versus a Pokemon just biting another. The Bite attack will be more powerful, but does not limit a Pokemon's natural behavior.
