Her rage was baffling. Her breath was like a Charizard’s, and Gary almost felt as if his hair would stir and his shirt would ripple against his chest due to the anger rushing from her mouth. He was thrown out of his cool, eyes popping and mouth curled into an intimidated frown. Most of Misty’s words meshed into one raucous, unpleasant noise, but it got the idea across. Misty was raving mad.
Gary’s initial thought was to blow it back in her face with some snide remark. No one spoke to Gary Oak that way, not even a Gym Leader, and especially not one of Ashy’s friends. But as she turned and apologized to Bugsy, who appeared just as enraged as the hot-headed girl, a moment of contemplation formed his brow. Okay, perhaps he had gone a little overboard. Maybe he had gotten too caught up in his training--it had been a long day, after all, and along with the constant stream of ordering his pokemon and studying their habits, he had met up with a terrifying Legendary and hadn’t seen his car or his cheerleaders since that morning.
Still, he was Gary Oak.
He inhaled, placing his hands on his hips, and then exhaled. He looked towards the earth and closed his eyes. An eyebrow rose along his forehead in a typical condescending front, and he spoke through a small frown in a voice that seemed almost apologetic--an extreme for Gary when dealing with others. ”I know how to train my pokemon, Misty.” Seemingly not a good start, ”but, if you think you can help, you’re welcome to… watch…” Gary glared to his side, gutting himself like a magikarp to bring forth these words, ”and… Give me pointers, or something.” Satisfied with his compromise, Gary closed his eyes and let out all the air that had pent itself up within his rib cage from the anxiety of such a feat. Remembering his other company, the boy opened one eye to glance at Bugsy. ”I expect to beat you in two days,” he stated shamelessly, reaching out a hand for a friendly shake.
Beside her trainer, Rattata twitched her whiskers and sighed. The boy she was stuck with was certainly something.

[/i] had happened, it was the why’s and how’s that were throwing her slightly off course. There was the bugs, cling and fear and now there was shouting, anger and… Apologies? No. No way! Misty refused to believe it, it was too surreal even for a day like today. Misty had often demanded that the male apologised for whatever misdeed he committed against her, but to her knowledge he never had. Not once. He’d just laughed and walked off, leaving her wanting to hit the closest thing. That thing was normally Ash. Recently she’d wondered if it was a case of couldn’t rather than wouldn’t. She’d begun to think there was some sort of genetic glitch in his system that made it impossible for him to apologise. Yet, here he was apologising. Okay, it wasn’t technically an apology and he hadn’t actually said the magic words ‘I’m Sorry’ but Misty knew that was the closest to an actual apology from the arrogant teenager so she decided to simple accept it. Even if she still couldn’t quite believe the words that she’d heard come out of his mouth. For a moment, she was tempted to taunt, goad and generally mock Gary guessing he was feeling bad about actually having to apologise and wanting to make him feel a whole lot worse. He wasn’t as if he hadn’t made her feel about two inches tall in the past. However, even as she entertained the thought she knew she couldn’t. Because just those thought made her feel bad, and Misty wondered why on earth her conscience had to bother her at this momentous event. It just wasn’t fair. So instead of pouncing on her victim like a bloodthirsty Persian pouncing on a Rattata, Misty just nodded her head slowly. "Oh… Um, yeah, okay. Sounds like a plan."She agreed with what seemed like hesitation, but was really just Misty being slightly tongue tied from the mental debate of tearing Gary to shreds with her words, or not. Quite obviously, the latter was triumphant, so after another pause she took a deep breath and decided she had to at least try and be nice. Dear Mew, this was going to kill her. "I’msorryifitseemedlikeisaidyoucouldn’ttrainyourpokemonI’msureyoucanreally."It all came out sounding like one big word, but Misty didn’t care. Apologising the Gary was like… Well, something very painful. Normally she wouldn’t have bothered and to be honest she wasn’t quite sure why she was making the effort now. Maybe it had something to do with Bugsy’s presence, or the fact Gary had already (sorta) apologised, and (sort of) looked after her when she was scared. She didn’t know, but the last two in the list were still making her feel a little shell-shocked. That wasn’t the Gary Oak she knew, and Misty wondered what on earth was going on. For a moment she was wondering if Celebi had done some sort of changling nonsense while nobody had been paying attention. She wouldn’t put it past the time pixie… Then the arrogance returned it all it’s glory, and Misty suddenly felt inexplicable relief. She even had to bit back a smile, and she hid it by tutting softly and rolling her eyes. But still, there was the Gary Oak she knew and loved (just an expression!!), and at least now she knew where she stood, and that Celebi hadn’t been messing with them all. That was good. "So we know the when, but where’s this battle going to be?"Despite herself, Misty was indeed intending to drop by and watch this battle even there would be (–shudder-) bugs involved. For one, she wanted to see if Gary could really back up all of his extremely confident words and secondly… Well she was just plain curious. Glancing around, Misty reasoned where they were standing would make a good battlefield. It had water, flatland, rocks and trees… She would suggest it to them, but it wasn’t her battle so she kept her mouth shut. Besides, the boy’s weren’t blind, they’d probably notice it too. Unless they were super stupid or something… [/ul]

Watching the change in Gary Oak’s demeanor was like teleporting from Snowpoint City to Lavaridge city. One moment he was arrogance embodied, the next he was apologizing? Even Bugsy, who wasn’t very good at reading humans, and who had never met Gary Oak before this day could detect how rare this was. He remained silent as his rather angry expression softened, glancing from Gary’s face to Misty’s. All in all, Bugsy had to respect the boy for letting his arrogance go, if only for a moment, to apologize. It was the polite thing to do, he realized. Therefore, even when Gary turned to Bugsy and boldly repeated his challenge, the young gym leader accepted the hand and shook it with a smile. “Two days. I look forward to it!” He told sincerely, his smile growing. The irritation he had felt towards the boy had been short-lived in the first place, and it appeared to have evaporated completely as he voiced this statement. However, at this point Bugsy recalled Misty, and how violently enraged she had been a moment before. He shot a nervous glance at her, not particularly eager to be caught in the crossfire should she still be upset. It was at this point that she agreed with Gary’s offer, sounding completely calm, perhaps even a bit surprised. Bugsy breathed an audible sigh of relief, offering Misty a smile as well as if asking, ‘all better?’ He gave a cheery chuckle when she apologized to Gary, saying it faster than Bugsy thought possible. Well, at least the awkwardness brought on by the fighting was over. “Maybe I could help you train too, Gary!” Bugsy offered merrily.

As Gary brought his hand back, he wondered what had compelled him to reach out in the first place. Sealing a deal was one thing, but doing so with a handshake just wasn’t Gary’s style. He blamed Misty. Now that he begun to settle back into a comfortable state, he almost wanted to wipe his hand off on the front of his shirt. He restrained himself, however; he had to keep up some sort of appearance, so he merely crossed his arms over his chest.
Misty’s response was an ideal one; Gary would no longer have to struggle with her hot-headedness, at least not for now. She was satisfied, and he supposed he could deal with her backseat training. As long as she doesn’t get too big-headed, Gary thought, dipping his head and wondering whether or not this truly was a good idea. He wasn’t certain how long he would be able to deal with Misty, but he was a cool-headed person, and he definitely did not want to get another upset Misty scene targeted toward him. Her angerfests were like walking on coals. Not many people could get through them without severe burns.
Gary lifted his head and raised an eyebrow at Misty’s attempt at reconciliation. ”I know,” he muttered, expressing no gratitude towards her gesture of kindness. He was completely satisfied with himself and didn’t need her telling him that he could train his pokemon--he already knew that, as he had stated.
Misty’s next question was annoying in that it wasn’t really necessary for her to ask. She wasn’t going to be battling; she was only going to ‘help’ Gary with his training (and if everything went Gary’s way, there wouldn’t be much of that, either.) However, before he had mustered an answer to get just that idea through her orange-topped head, Bugsy piped up.
He frowned. ”What is it with you two? Do you get off to training other people’s pokemon?” he grumbled, shamelessly crude. Still, there was something of an opportunity in Bugsy’s offer. Gary glanced up from the ground to the Gym Leader, one long spike of hair that hung in front of his face waving slightly. Perhaps Bugsy’s idea wasn’t so bad after all--Gary would be able to see his opponent’s pokemon in action if they trained together, which would be all the more beneficial towards his victory. Even though he had handled plenty of bug pokemon at his grandfather’s lab, it wouldn’t hurt to see the unique techniques Bugsy undoubtedly applied to his team. ”Sure,” Gary said with a sudden smile, lifting his chin thoughtfully and grinning down at the kid. ”I was planning on going through Viridian Forest. You’d feel right at home there, huh?” His nasal voice was as confident as ever, and he spared not a thought towards Misty and her blatant phobia of bugs. ”We could travel through there and then hold our battle in the next town.” He was certain it wouldn’t be a problem for Bugsy--and if it was, perhaps those who appointed the Gym Leaders should reconsider their option for whatever badge Bugsy held authority over. Gary glanced at Misty, his grin wavering, still too thoughtless to acknowledge her distaste for what roamed rampant in the forest. ”That good enough for ya?” Gary still wasn’t pleased that Misty was getting to involved with his battle, and he held nothing back in his voice. She wasn’t his mother, for Mew’s sake.

[/i] long way. But.... But she could deal with it. Because she Misty, and better than Gary by the same distance and she would prove that she could cope. Yes, that was it. Even though she was pretty sure soon enough she was going to explode from all the stress. Mostly stress from having to be around Gary for this long, and not having Ash around. Because at least when Ash was there he'd defend her. Bugsy had tried some defense, true, but it hadn't worked all that well. Seeing as he was quite small, and Ash was far better at shouting at Gary. The two boys had a lifetime's experience of bugging each other to go on. "You're a jackass."She said quite calmly in response to Gary's comment, feeling quite proud that she resisted the very tempting temptation to kick him in the balls. It was indeed very tempting. In fact, she almost considered breaking her temporary resolution not to cause pain to the male just to hear the very nasal pained scream that would no doubt accompany her foot between his legs.... No. She had to be calm, calm and non violent. Calm like a smooth lagoon, yes, undisturbed, peaceful, tranquil.... Super calm. Nothing could break her from her calmness, not Gary Oak, not Bugsy odd obsession with the icky, nasty creatures and not the fact Gary had just suggested they go through Virdian Forest home of the icky, nasty bugs. Nope, she was calm. Perfectly caaaaalmmm. Wait. "V-Viridian Forest?"Damn that stammer. It was justified though, because y'know, it was Viridian Forest. It was like a shady, tree-lined hell. Defiantly hell. Misty took a deep shuddering breath and tried to hold onto the composure she'd managed to gain earlier. "C'mon Misty, pull yourself together!"The redhead mentally berated herself, not exactly thrilled about letting Gary and Bugsy see another episode of THE MISTY FREAKOUT SHOW. She did have some pride. Okay, she had a lot of pride but pride was clearly pwn'd by fear, especially when it was a fear of Bugs. With their evil, creepy eyes and- Calm. Calm. Don't think about, don't think about it. Caaaalm. " Sounds.... Sounds f-fine. And you're still a Jackass."She said with what she hoped was confidence that oozed calm but she had a feeling she'd failed utterly. In all honestly, she wanted to cry. Or, something akin to that, because Misty did not cry. Never. Not even that time Daisy pushed her off her bike and she cut her elbow so badly she had to get stitches. She didn't cry. No, she put bubblegum in her sisters hair and showed off her 'battle scar' at school. That last time she cried was... Well, when her parents left. But that was totally different. The insulting was definitly helping, she made a mental note of that. When confronted with bugs, insult the nearest person. Mhmm, sounded good. "So... We're going to Pewter then?"Pewter was good. Pewter was a city she was familiar with, mostly because it was home to one of her good friends. Dammit, why couldn't Brock be here to get her through this hell-ish forest instead of Gary? He'd look after her... Brock wouldn't leave her to the Weedles! Misty shuddered. [/ul]

Bugsy didn’t really realize it when Gary reverted back to his regular arrogant attitude. However, even the slight out-of-touch gym leader knew it couldn’t really have lasted long. Gary seemed to have pride to burn, and the fire only seemed to wane briefly to make room for any kindness. Bugsy couldn’t say he hated the boy though, firstly because he believed there had to be something good behind the ego, and secondly because he thought that ‘hate’ was too strong a word to use in any case. Despite this kind-hearted principle, Bugsy couldn’t help but frown when Gary began to speak. He figuratively slapped Misty’s apology down with a proud ‘I know’, and Bugsy knew this was not the appropriate response to a heartfelt, if slightly rushed, apology. He took a step away from the boy, moving closer to Misty, as if by being closer they could combat and perhaps cure Gary’s rudeness. However, Bugsy was beginning to doubt that there was any way Gary could be ‘cured’. “We were just asking if you wanted some help. Three people can do anything better than just one person alone,” Bugsy told rather wisely. He continued by stating, “But if you’re too proud to accept help from two gym leaders taking time away from their own pursuits, then perhaps we should just go our own ways.” He completed rather coldly, a stark contrast to how smiley he had been previously. However, Bugsy’s frown softened into an expression of surprise when Gary suddenly smiled down at him and accepted his offer. This expression swiftly made way for one of joy when it was mentioned they would be going through Viridian Forest. “Oh, yes! I really would feel at home in Viridian Forest! I already went in to look around a bit and it’s really cool in there! So many Bugs!” He exclaimed, his eyes growing distant as he, presumably, thought back to his adventures in the insect-ridden Viridian Forest. Bugsy seemed to have forgotten his irritation with Gary, as anyone who asked him to go to Viridian Forest, which had lots of lovely, wonderful, interesting Bugs, had to be forgiven for any sort of slight. It was only natural. “And holding the battle in Pewter City would be great!” He added, not looking at Gary. However, the daydreaming young Gym leader was brought back to reality when he heard Misty stammer behind him. Ohh. She feared Bugs. This surely wouldn’t be a very fun trip for her. “Uhm, miss Misty, don’t be…scared. The Bugs are really very shy. They won’t hurt you, and they probably won’t even come near you!” He explained, shuffling his feet rather nervously. He was trying to be comforting, but he didn’t really know what to say. He stared intently at her for a moment, as if trying to transfer some of his love for Bugs to her to counteract her fear. However, Misty put on a brave face and didn’t complain. Bugsy respected the girl who was willing to confront her fear. He could really see why she was a gym leader. He was about to comment on this, and perhaps try out some more verbal encouragement, when he heard another unfamiliar voice, and it was coming nearer. He turned to the new addition, giving him a smile of greeting. He didn’t recognize the ex-Gym leader of Pewter City, however. “I wouldn’t mind another addition! You’re welcome to join us! My name’s Bugsy, by the way,” His eyes widened in curiosity when he addressed Misty directly, however. “Oh, you’re friends with miss Misty?”

Misty’s stammering caused Gary to raise his eyebrow at her; he expected her to merely comply more than anything else. Gary didn’t need her delaying his training even more. The day was fading quickly, and their little squabble wasn’t helping his pokemon grow stronger. Once she agreed, that was all he needed; the fact that the hot-headed gym leader tagged on a rude little comment on the end did not phase Gary. (A guy like him? He was used to it, and he couldn’t care less.)
Bugsy’s reply was just as satisfactory. Although his initial retorts begged for a skirmish, Gary merely inwardly rolled his eyes. I don’t have time for this… he thought to himself while the rest of his mind concocted ways to make up for the precious hours he had lost. Rattata needed to work on experience, that was all: there was nothing in particular about her that worried Gary. Her power and speed were enough. Squirtle, on the other hand, had his speed to work on, as well as his skill.
Finally, both of them had come to an agreement, and Gary was just happy it was settled. He turned to head for Viridian, but lo and behold, yet another bump in the road came to delay his training.
A voice climbed into his ears, and Gary closed his eyes in irritation as he rounded on the newcomer. Even as Bugsy introduced himself, Gary spoke over the boy‘s light voice. ”If anyone else would like to stall my training, do it now!” he uttered bitterly, cocking an eyebrow and eventually taking in the other’s appearance. Wait: another Gym Leader? Was there some convention going on? Well, he supposed a Gym Leader was a Gym Leader (and they weren’t all as hopeless as Misty, the girl with the case of the PMS that never stopped) and deserved a certain amount of estimation. But then--hold it--this one knew Misty. He decided enough was enough--he wasn’t going to stand for some happy reunion. ”Can we move this along? I’m heading to the forest. You can talk and walk, right, Misty?” Gary remarked in a low voice before plucking a pokeball from his belt and silently returning the rattata that sat by his feet. Without waiting for an answer, Gary turned and did as he said he would: he headed for the forest, hands in his pockets and spiked hair mingling with the wind.

[/b][/color] She muttered weakly, and even managed to dredge up what might have been the Most Pathetic Attempt At A Smile Since Time Began (TM). Still, it was better than nothing right? And nothing was what Gary was giving, well that was if you defined nothing to be the attitude of a big, stupid jerk. ... Yeah, Misty really needed to work on her insults. A frown creased her brows as she picked up on a rather odd sound. Clanging? Clanking? Clattering? It definitely had a 'cla' sort of ring to it. Metallic. Curiosity took over, and she turned instinctively to try and figure out what colliding metal was doing on the edge of a forest. It didn't seem to be the right place for it to be, Nu-uh. Her gaze alighted on a figure running towards them and she blinked in surprise. Who on earth would be running towards Gary? It wasn't a cheerleader, and it wasn't Ash or Oak or his sister and to be honest Misty couldn't think of anybody else who would willingly be near the male. Okay, apart from her and Bugsy but she wasn't exactly willing. It was a matter of pride now, enjoying his company had nothing to do with it! So was this person running towards Bugsy? No it didn't make sense, he'd only just arrived in Kanto, who would be stalking him? So did that mean the person was running towards her? No... No that didn't make any sense either! As Misty attempted to puzzle it out, the person reached their makeshift gathering, though apparently very out of breath. However, as he spoke Misty's confusion quickly faded away to be replaced by a sudden shock of delight. Even with all the panting, she could recognize that voice. Of course she'd recognize that voice! And the hair! And the clothes! And the random but no doubt useful cooking pots! She couldn't help it, a grin began to slip onto her face, the joy of finding an actual friend in this crazyness even smothering her fear of bugs and the fact one Gary Oak was mere feet away. "Brock!! You have no idea how happy I am to see youuuu!"She exclaimed in delight, brushing his words aside with the little 'squee' of joy she emitted before suddenly lunging forward and hurling herself on the older boy's frame. Her arms locked around his neck as she flung the hug upon his form. The height difference meant she practically swung from his neck, her feet skimming the floor but Misty didn't care, because it was Brock! Her little bubble of joy was burst with surprising accuracy by the one, the only, you guessed it, Gary. ""Haha Gary, you're so funny."Misty made no attempt to disguise the sarcasm in her voice as she directed the words at Gary, a slight growl in her tones. The redhead unlocked her pale arms from around her friend and dropped back to the dirt. She directed a glare at Gary's retreating form, not caring that he wouldn't even see it. However, she offered Bugsy a much more convincing smile than her earlier one and after a deep breath took a few uncertain steps towards the forest fringe. She could do this, she could do this. Okay, she totally needed backup. ""Um... You two will keep the b-bugs away w-won't you?"She glanced over her shoulder at the two as she spoke, uncertainty filling her tones once more.[/ul]

Bugsy turned back to face Gary with an almost pitying expression on his young face. Behind the pity there was a degree of irritation toward the boy, of course, because after all, it was only polite to take three seconds to introduce yourself to a newcomer, but Gary couldn’t appear to have even a moment to spare. It was ironic, actually. The time he spent voicing his impatience toward the newcomer who was ‘stalling his training’ could have been spent saying ‘hello’, and a whole lot of rudeness could have been prevented. But despite the fact that the young Gym leader did not approve of Gary’s form of a greeting, there was indeed something like pity on his face when he looked at the new trainer. After all, he was just so impatient. But because he was also very proud he didn’t even seem to realize what a great flaw this was. And Bugsy was going to do his best to convey this even though words were not his best point. “Gary…when a Caterpie evolves into a Metapod, it can’t move that much anymore. It pretty much just has to sit there motionless for a very long time collecting energy to evolve again. Any time it moves even a little, it wastes all that time spent collecting energy--” Bugsy began, before realizing he had sort-of lost his train of thought and this was becoming more of a lecture on the nature of Metapod. He hastily tried to fix this. “—Metapod are really patient. They have to be, you get it? So…you have to be like a Metapod, too. Patient.” So that was what the whole mini-speech culminated into. Be like a Metapod, Gary. Bugsy breathed a sigh. He felt more disappointed in his speaking skills than embarrassed, but when he turned back to Misty, there was a vague blush colouring his cheeks. “I’m very sorry I couldn’t be more comforting, miss Misty. I’m not very good with words,” He explained sheepishly, giving a slight bow. He straightened from this position and blinked twice with surprise when Brock shook his hand. He tightened his grip on the older boy’s hand and returned the shake, giving a wide smile. He was already getting a very good impression of the boy. A great contrast from Gary’s rude entrance, and Misty’s shriek of a greeting. This appeared to be the only run-of-the-mill introduction Bugsy had been through today. “It’s no problem, mister. It is always nice to have a travel partner!” Bugsy agreed cheerfully. Bugsy’s smile widened and he chuckled when Misty effectively launched herself toward the newcomer and hugged him, calling him ‘Brock’. At this, the purple-haired boy realized that asking if the two were friends had been a redundant question. He nodded politely as Brock answered the question, however. Misty seemed to brighten up considerably just upon seeing him, and she appeared to be much more calm about the prospect of going through Viridian Forest. Bugsy glanced about him briefly, feeling his belt to make sure all of his pokeballs were in place. He adjusted the bug-catching net strapped to his back and scooped up his pack, before taking a few steps after Misty and Gary. He had already begun daydreaming about the insects they were soon to encounter, when the girl before him turned back to him and Brock. “Of course! I’m the Bug-pokemon expert! I won’t let any of them come near you,” Bugsy told confidently. With one of Misty’s good friends to help him out with protecting the girl from bugs, it had turned from a fairly straight-forward goal, to an effortless one. Most of the Bugs were timid, anyway, so as long as they encountered no aggressive, large Kanto Beedrill, they probably wouldn’t see many. While this disappointed the boy, Bugsy realized that with the friendly-seeming Brock there he might be able to go on quick sidetrips to search for Bugs on his own. He might not be able to resist once he was back in the forest, anyway, he thought sheepishly. He knew he could become very manic when searching for insects. He sped up his pace to match it with Misty’s, beginning to hum merrily under his breath.

Gary did not wait for Bugsy to finish his little speech/rant/whatever it was, he didn’t much care. He realized small-time Gym Leaders like Bugsy might not have a tight schedule to keep, but Gary had a plan of his own, and it did not consist of being held up by those who wanted to sit around and talk. He was a Pokemon Trainer; ergo, he had pokemon to train. Surrounded by Gym Leaders… it was a funny situation. Did any of them appreciate what Gary was going through? Did any of them remember how it was when they first started out? Or were they all raised with pre-trained pokemon? They had it easy. Gary knew that Misty could use the pokemon at her gym, no problem, and they had already been trained by her parents and sisters (although Gary wasn’t exactly sure if the latter had the brains). Brock and Bugsy… They were probably the same. Gary had set a goal for himself, and that was that: he was going to reach it, even if he had to end up waiting at the finish line for the others to catch up. Or just Bugsy, really; Gary couldn’t care less if Misty was there or not. Maybe Gary didn’t exactly ‘respect’ Gym Leaders as much as you were supposed to--but why should he? Especially if they were holding him back. If they wanted to help, wouldn’t they be eager to get on the road as well? Gym Leaders were just regular trainers who happened to pass a test. Regular trainers who have probably forgotten what it’s really like to be a trainer. There was no respect to pay until Gary battled them. “Ta.” The minute sound came from the rattata toddling by Gary’s feet. Her curled tail moved side-to-side with each quick step, pace hastened to keep up with her trainer’s long strides. Normally, Gary most likely would have kept her in her pokeball, same as Squirtle. She was already proving to be more of a catch than Squirtle was, however, and he wanted to test her out on the next wild pokemon anyway. He knew that rattata evolved quickly, and raticates’ fangs were powerful forces. With a raticate on his team, he’d chomp through Bugsy’s pokemon. The entrance to Viridian Forest loomed above the two with thick tree tops that obscured sunlight. By now, dusk was commencing quickly, but not even the moonlight would help too much in lighting their path. Gary glanced down at Rattata, hands in his pockets and one long spike hanging in front of his frowning face. She returned his gaze with her pink eyes and a twitch of her nose. Gary didn’t acknowledge the others before continuing into Viridian forest. ((next post: flyiingwithoutwings.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=viridianforest&thread=355 =D))
